Dental Implants vs Bridges vs Dentures: Which Is Right for You?
Losing a tooth is more than a cosmetic problem. Gaps can affect how you eat and speak, and over time the surrounding teeth and bone can change. The good news is that three well-established options can replace a missing tooth: a dental implant, a bridge, or a denture. Each has genuine strengths, and the right choice depends on your mouth, your health and what matters most to you.
Dental implants
An implant replaces the root and the visible tooth. A small titanium post is placed in the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone over a few months, and a custom crown is fitted on top. Because it stands on its own, it doesn't rely on neighbouring teeth, and it helps keep the jawbone stimulated where the tooth was lost.
The trade-offs: implants involve a minor surgical procedure, they take longer to complete (typically several months from placement to final restoration), and they usually cost more upfront than the alternatives. You also need enough healthy bone and gum to support one, although bone grafting can often help where there isn't.
Dental bridges
A bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring a false tooth to the teeth on either side. It's typically quicker to complete than an implant and doesn't require jaw surgery.
The trade-off is that the supporting teeth usually need to be reshaped to hold the bridge, which means altering teeth that may be perfectly healthy. A bridge also doesn't replace the root, so the bone beneath the gap isn't stimulated in the same way.
Dentures
Dentures are removable replacements that sit on the gums, either partial (replacing some teeth) or full (replacing a whole arch). They're a non-surgical option, usually the most affordable, and can replace several or all teeth at once.
The trade-offs are comfort and stability. Dentures can move when eating or speaking, need daily removal and cleaning, and may need adjusting or replacing as the gums and bone change shape over time.
Which one is right for you?
There's no single best answer. Implants tend to suit people who want a long-term, stand-alone solution and are suitable for minor surgery. A bridge can make sense when the neighbouring teeth already need crowns, or when surgery isn't appropriate. Dentures can be the right choice when several teeth are missing, when budget is a priority, or when medical factors make implants unsuitable.
The most reliable way to decide is a proper assessment. At Baudelaire Dental Clinic, we use our in-house CBCT scanner to view your bone and surrounding teeth in 3D, so we can walk you through what's genuinely suitable for you, including when an implant isn't the best option.
